Teaching and Academic Work


Jonathan is a visiting Professor at the Dickson Poon School of Law, Kings College London University where he is Programme Director of the specialist  International Tax law LLM. The international tax programme is offered both on campus and online, an initiative launched by Jonathan in 2018.

 

He teaches on the post-graduate international tax, EU tax and transfer pricing courses. The subjects he teaches relate to his professional practice including various aspects of tax treaties, transfer pricing, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, international investment funds, and remedies for breach of EU law.

 

He is a regular visiting lecturer including on LLM programmes at the International Tax Center, Leiden, the University of British Columbia, the Université catholique de Louvain, University of Lausanne and the University of Zurich and an original member of the advisory board for the Advanced LLM (Transfer Pricing) at the International Tax Center, Leiden.

 

In May 2009 he chaired a session at the OECD's International Tax Seminar for Judges, and has also chaired several seminars at the annual congresses of the International Fiscal Association including on Business Restructuring, EC law and Exit Taxes, and on Abuse of Law in EC Law. In November 2008 he gave the 16th Hardman Memorial Lecture for the Tax Faculty of the ICAEW.

 

Other teaching assignments have been at the International Tax Academy of the International Bureau of Fiscal Documentation in Amsterdam in The Netherlands, BPP Professional Development and others. His courses have included: Successful use of tax treaties; practical transfer pricing; permanent establishments, residence of individuals, companies and trusts; taxation of cross-border commercial transactions, taxation of internationally mobile employees and effective tax appeals.

 

He was a member of the EU Commission Expert Group on removing tax problems facing individuals who are active across borders within the EU in 2014 and 2015. He was the United Kingdom's participant on the 2005-2006 joint OECD-IFA research project on Practical Application of Tax Treaties and a member of the IFA ad hoc committee on Enhanced Relationships.

 

In-house seminars and continuing professional education for law firms, accountancy firms, and other professional organisations as well as tax administrations can be provided where he is available.

 

Editorial appointments have included the FT World Tax Report, Business Law International, EC Tax Journal and the Offshore and International Tax Review.
